Budget Airlines 101: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Flying on a budget airline can feel like a steal—or a trap. One minute you’re thrilled you scored a £25 flight to Barcelona, the next you’re paying extra to breathe on board. But budget travel doesn’t have to mean bad travel. With a little prep and realistic expectations, you can make the most of those too-good-to-be-true fares. Here’s what to expect—and how to avoid the rookie mistakes.
1. The Price Is Just the Beginning
Budget airlines lure you in with low base fares—but the extras add up fast. Want to choose your seat? That’s extra. Bringing more than a tiny backpack? Pay up. Even water might come with a price tag. Read the fine print before you book, and factor in all the fees before declaring it a deal.
2. Pack Light—Seriously
Most budget airlines only allow a personal item for free (think: small backpack). A full-sized carry-on or checked bag usually costs more than your ticket. Wear your bulkiest shoes, layer up, and become one with your packing cubes. If you can’t travel light, a standard airline might actually be cheaper in the end.
3. Don’t Expect Frills
No free snacks, no built-in screens, and don’t even think about reclining. Budget airlines are all about the basics: a seat, a seatbelt, and (hopefully) an on-time arrival. Bring your own entertainment, snacks, water bottle, and maybe even a neck pillow if comfort’s important to you.
